Rooted in love

Paul in Ephesians 3 v 14 - 21 prays for the church in Ephesus. He prays that they would be ‘rooted and established in love’ (v17). What does it mean to be rooted in love?

Well, I began thinking about the roots of a plant. At the foundation of a plant are roots. These roots ensure that the plant receives its’ nourishment from the soil. The depth of the roots can determine the resilience of the plant against the elements.

We need to be rooted in the love of our Father God. As the plant obtains nourishment from the soil, we obtain ‘nourishment’ from God’s love. To be rooted in His love gives us identity and security. We need to have roots that are deep in His love so that we are not easily shaken, moved, or pulled out. When rooted in His love we will be able to ask our neighbour or colleague if they want prayer for healing, and will not be afraid of their rejection.
