What is your surname?

On Tuesdays we have a half night of prayer. This week we were asked to pray Ephesians 3 v 14 - 21 for us individually and corporately as a church. A few things struck me as I meditated on it and prayed.

In verse 14 it says, ‘for this reason I kneel before the Father, from whom his whole family in heaven and on earth derives its name.’ As I read this certain words were highlighted, ‘derives its name‘. I thought about an earthly family and how you get your identity from your family name. Surnames are passed down to future generations through the father’s line. This name links you to that family. You are part of it. It is your identity.

Well then, does this mean I get my name from God? The answer has to be YES! I am now part of His family and so get my identity from Him. But, I am not part of the large extended family, or that He is a distance relative that I’ve never met. Actually, I’m in the immediate family, I’m His child and He is my Daddy. This brings me true security and assurance. Such a simple truth, one that I have heard several times. But this time it went to my heart.
