I love those times of prayer when God shatters the way I think about something, especially when I think I’ve got something completely sussed and then He very kindly shows me otherwise. I’ve been stuck on the book of Haggai for the last week or so, knowing that God wanted to say something but not quite hearing it. Finally in prayer, I got it….. Then the Lord sent this message through the prophet Haggai: Why are you living in luxurious houses while My house lies in ruins?…..Look at what’s happening to you! Now go up into the hills, bring down timber and rebuild My house. Then I will take pleasure in it and be honoured, says the Lord. You hoped for rich harvests, but they were poor. And when you brought your harvest home, I blew it away. Why? Because My house lies in ruins, says the Lord of Heavens Armies, while all of you are busy building your own fine houses (Hag 1:3-1). The question that God put to me is, ‘What are you building?’. The thing is that we can really believe we are living for God and for the coming of His kingdom on this earth when really our heart is like Peter’s when he said, ‘We’ve given up everything to follow You. What will we get?’ (Mt 19:27). My argument was that I’ve given up my dreams of my own home, my own family, and even a good job because God asked me to. Now my life is given to prayer, and seeking God for His kingdom to come and His will to be done. But God always takes these things to a deeper level. He looks not only at the external, but at my heart. It is easy to think you’ve given up everything for God when really you’ve just substituted one of your ambitions for another. To be honest, I want a good, successful future. I want to be used by God. I want to fulfill my destiny. Basically, i’m still building my own fine house. I’m just using a different material. But today God is saying, ‘Now go up into the hills, bring down timber, and rebuild My house’. The timber used for building God’s house is only found in the hills and on the mountains of God’s Presence. It is pure, spiritual material undefiled my my carnal desires and selfish ambitions. It is a material given to us when we really take up our cross and seek first the Kingdom of God.
